Knowing what awaits behind the kiln door is simply boring

About

Eglė Baranauskaitė - Valentinavičienė
b. 1989 m.

I held my first solo exhibition in 2022 while studying at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since then—and come to think of it, long before—the themes of my work have remained constant, summarized by a single word: uncomfortable.

The bodies depicted in my sculptures often feel ill at ease, operating at the very limit of their possibilities. The same applies to the raw materials I use. I layer different clay bodies and constantly risk the disappointment of cracks; however, I believe it is precisely this risk that drives me to experiment again and again, each time more boldly. With every successful experiment, I push the boundaries of my creative playground further.

I dislike routine, repetitive work; it’s dull to know exactly what I’ll find when I open the kiln door, which is why my process is rooted in intuitive practice. I cut, layer, throw, cut again, and throw the clay to the ground, guided only by hunch; at this stage, I let my mind rest. The occasional failures of the firing process harden and shape me as a person, making everyday challenges seem far less significant.
